Ever had time sneak up on you?
Be it with your schedule, your schooling, parenting, a board or committee you’re serving on, an event you’re organizing. . . But from out of nowhere time just—WHAM!—hits you right in the face, and you wonder, “Where on earth did all the time go?”
That happened to me last night when I happened across a collection of family pictures as I’m working to clean up my hard drive to free up some space.
Here are Joe, me and the kids when we first moved to Colorado in 1990 . . .
Gracious, we were young. Kelsey was three, and Kurt was scarcely 16 months old.
Then seventeen quick years later, in 2007, when we moved to Nashville . . .
Below is a collage from that same photo session with our precious Jack with us (who was all of 1-year old at the time).
And now a brief blink and another ten years have passed . . .
Murphy is with us now—energetic as always—and we celebrated Kelsey’s 30th birthday this past Saturday. We went to see the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie then to J. Alexander’s for an early dinner (no relation to the restaurant owners, just love their food!).
But seriously… Twenty-seven years. Gone. Just like that. In a blink!
I know many of you will be able to empathize. That you, too, have turned around to find certain stages of life somehow in the rear view mirror, or that your kids are now grown (or growing all too fast!). Or perhaps that one or more of your precious parents have gone on Home before you, and now you’re the matriarch (or patriarch, as the case may be) of your family.
When did that happen?
In truth, it happens in tiny increments of seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, and months that pass all too quickly into years. Maybe it’s my “baby” turning 30, maybe it’s missing Mom yet again on Mother’s Day yesterday (she’s been gone now almost eight years), but I’m reminded of how swiftly this life really does pass.
I turned to the Word this morning to be reminded of what the Lord says about time’s passing…
That’s become one of my prayers in this season of life. Not only to realize life’s brevity—because in realizing it we face life’s decisions so differently. But to grow in wisdom.
Do we share this feeling of time sweeping past us? And maybe this prayer, too?
Happy Tuesday, friends!
